The Program
Geneviève Gros-Louis - Commissioned work created in collaboration with Dr. Phillip Cash Cash (Nez Perce, Cayuse)
Modest Mussorgsy - Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Maurice Ravel)
What Makes This Concert Interesting
A new commission brings a local connection to the program through the Symphony’s partnership with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
Mussorgsky wrote Pictures at an Exhibition after visiting a memorial art exhibit for his friend Viktor Hartmann. Many of the original artworks are now lost, so Mussorgsky’s music has become one of the ways they are remembered.
The recurring “Promenade” theme represents Mussorgsky himself walking through the exhibition. Each time it returns, it helps move listeners from one picture to the next.
